In a significant development this September, the Mozilla Festival House made its inaugural appearance in Kenya, addressing critical issues at the intersection of emerging technology and the African continent. The event delved into topics such as digital extractivism and AI governance, shedding light on the evolving landscape of digital technologies in Africa.
MozFest House: Kenya served as a regional extension of the renowned Mozilla Festival, an annual gathering that brings together technologists, researchers, policymakers, activists, and more to explore themes related to a healthy internet and trustworthy AI. Held on September 21-22, 2023, at the cozy Shamba House Cafe in Nairobi, this event aimed to foster spaces where diverse communities could convene, exchange knowledge, engage in debates, and establish partnerships.
One of the highlights of MozFest House: Kenya was an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience, allowing attendees to revisit the first MozFest held in March 2023. Developed by Picha Images, this VR journey enabled participants to virtually explore the event’s venue, engage with each other in a spatially immersive environment, and experience high-quality spatial sound.
Within the virtual main hall, attendees encountered ten portals that transported them to various engaging experiences. From an amusement park to a data virtual world and fireside chats, MozFest House: Kenya offered a diverse range of virtual encounters, enriching the overall event experience.
